Vision

The Ambulatory Surgery Center of Killeen needed to be designed and equipped for multispecialty procedures, with an additional 1,000 square feet dedicated to a single physician clinic. The center features two operating rooms at 360 square feet each. As an ambulatory surgical center, the facility had to comply with specific requirements. While the center was designed for pain procedures, the processing areas had to also accommodate multiple specialties in the future.

While the technical requirements were numerous, the patient experience was also integral to the design. The interior themes were rooted in earth tones and natural elements. Materials such as stone and wood were used and the wall coverings and upholstery were specifically chosen to reinforce the nature-oriented themes. The natural light utilized in the patient areas was also central in the design to enhance their experience.

Challenges

The surgical center was designed to accommodate multifaceted surgical uses and needed two full size sterilizers and pass-through washers. The electrical infrastructure of the building was complex, as it needed to support C-arm and larger scale sterilization stations. Additionally, ceiling-mounted single head surgical lights and a variety of support equipment, including medical refrigerators, warming cabinets and an ice maker contributed to complex plumbing and electrical needs.

Success

The new facility stands out in Killeen as a leading-edge surgical center serving the community. The design incorporates best practices in medical design and aligns with code and license requirements. It also reflects new concepts in patient-centered care with the use of daylight and nature-inspired design.
